Turning Red is an American computer-animated comedy film about a 2022 American fantasy comedy. It was produced by Pixar Animation Studios, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It was directed by Domee Shi as her feature directorial debut. It was written and directed by Shi and Julia Cho and produced and directed by Lindsey Collins. It features Rosalie Chiang’s voices, Sandra Oh, Hyein Morse and Tristan Allerick Chen. Turning Red, set in Toronto (Ontario) in 2002, follows Meilin Lee, a Chinese-Canadian teenager who, when she experiences strong emotions, transforms into an enormous red panda.

This film is the first Pixar film directed solely by a female director. After Shi’s Toronto experiences, the film’s development began in May 2018. She pitched it to Pixar in Oct 2017. Additionally, several Pixar animators visited various locations in Northern California to collect visual references. The anime inspired the animation and design. Ludwig Goransson composed and Billie Eilish performed original songs for the film.
Special screenings were held at Everyman Borough Yards in London on February 21, 2022 and at TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto on March 8, 2022. It premiered in Los Angeles at the El Capitan Theatre, March 1. On March 11, it was released on Disney+ streaming and limited theaters. It was released theatrically in almost all countries, and it grossed over $20 million. It received positive reviews from critics despite being a disaster at the box office.
Meilin Lee, 13, lives in Toronto with Ming and Jin. She takes care of their family’s temple dedicated Sun Yee. Ming doesn’t know about her interests. She does not know that Miriam, Priya, Abby, and Priya are all fans of 4*Town. Ming, who is strict, protective, and impulsive, discovers Mei’s crush on Devon the local convenience store clerk. Mei is humiliated in public.
Mei is thrown into a nightmare by red pandas the next night. The next morning, Mei wakes up to discover that she had transformed into a large red-colored panda. She hides this from her parents. However, she soon discovers that she can only transform when she is experiencing high emotions. She reverts back to her human form but her hair is still red. So she goes to school wearing a touque. Ming initially believed Mei was experiencing her first period. However, Ming discovers the truth after humiliating Mei at school. Mei then transforms and runs home in panic.
